MALTA — Kishwaukee College seated Aiyanna Washington as the new student trustee on the College’s Board of Trustees at the April meeting. Washington was elected by her peers to the position and took over the role of outgoing Student Trustee Perla Gonzales.

Washington, of Rochelle, is pursuing an associate in arts degree with plans to graduate in the spring of 2025. Following her time at Kish, she plans to study psychology and sociology. At Kish, Washington is a member of TRIO Student Support Services, the Black Student Union, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Student Government Association. In the role of Student Trustee, Washington said she plans to be an active supporter and voice of the Kish student body.

“As the Student Trustee, I hope to make a difference in as many ways as I can. I hope to address as many of my classmates’ concerns as possible and make everyone feel heard. By the end of my term, I hope to be able to look back and see all the changes I have been a part of to help make Kish a better place for all,” Washington said.

Gonzales, of Kirkland, will graduate in May with an associate in applied science degree in registered nursing. Following her time at Kish, she plans to join the workforce at a regional hospital while continuing her education, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a nurse practitioner license.

“Perla has been an excellent representative of all Kishwaukee College students, and the Board wishes her well in her next step,” Bob Johnson, chair of the Board of Trustees, said. “We are pleased to welcome Aiyanna to the Student Trustee role and look forward to collaborating with her.”

Gonzales has served as Kish’s Student Trustee since January 2023. Among the many initiatives accomplished during her tenure, Gonzales said eliminating student fees is one she is most proud of.

“The elimination of student fees allows for transparency when students are selecting a college, so they know exactly what they are expected to pay once they weigh out their options,” Gonzales said. “I believe that one of the main barriers that stop not only college-aged students but also returning adults from getting an education is financial constraints. Kish has already made great strides in aiding the student body financially. Initiatives like these allow students to better focus on academic excellence.”

In addition to serving as the Student Trustee, Gonzales is a member of the Student Government Association, Student Nursing Organization, National Society of Leadership and Success, Latinos Unidos, and Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honors Society.
