Flagg Township Museum to host tree planting, Dog Day, marker dedication

ROCHELLE — The community is encouraged to attend a tree planting at the Flagg Township Museum. The museum lost a tree on the west side of the building in 2023 and Girl Scouts from Troop 409 along with other Girl Scouts from Southern Ogle Service Unit will be planting a new tree at the museum on Tuesday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. But not just any tree! It’s out state tree – the white oak. It was Laura Fessler from Rochelle who first worked with the school superintendent to have school children vote for the state tree and the state flower. Hidden Timber Gardens will be on hand for the planting of the white oak that was purchased for the museum by Girl Scout Troop 409. A small ceremony will be held for the planting along with refreshments.

Then on April 27 at 11 a.m. it’s 2-for-1 at the museum. Dog Day at the Iron Fountain is a special event for your favorite dog to be the first to drink from the 1915 Iron Fountain this season. Special treats for dogs and people too will be available on Saturday. Thanks to the city for getting us ready for this event by making sure the water line was secure so we can turn it on. Drinks of water for man or beast from the Iron Fountain are always available when the museum is open, Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Then it’s the dedication of the newly installed Lincoln Highway marker. This marker would have been one of 3,400 that were installed along the highway by Boy Scouts in 1928 and was generously donated to the museum in 2023 by Steve and Kathy Haas. We thank the city for their help preparing the space for the marker.

The mission of the Flagg Township Historical Society and Museum is to stimulate interest in Flagg Township history through education, research, collection and preservation of information for the benefit of the public of today and in the future.
