ROCHELLE — Some outdoor fun and a splash of color made for a great Color Run for the HUB Project students Tuesday morning, celebrating the last week of summer session.
The event was organized by the HUB’s Girl Scout troop, which included planning the course, creating posters and spraying the runners along the way. Each of the 120 HUB students decorated their own shirts for the run.
Brittanie Shearer, HUB Project teacher and Girl Scout troop leader, said everything went smoothly. Through collaboration the girls decided what needed to be written in the note sent home to parents as well as planning for the event. The girls worked in partners to make the colored powder made with cornstarch, also working together at each of the color stations to spray the runners.
“I’m very proud of them for using their skills to organize an event that created a fun activity for all of the HUB kids to enjoy! During our meetings, we strive to create a healthy atmosphere of fun where the girls learn the importance of thinking about others and being kind to everyone,” Shearer said. “Even though they knew that they would not get to do the run like the other kids, since they were spraying the color, they were excited to provide the color run for summer HUB. They are a great group of girls. I am very thankful that I get to be their leader!”
This week wrapped up the three week summer session for the HUB students. Each day the students arrived at 8:30, started with breakfast, then to academics until 10:30. The last hour consisted of enrichment activities.
The Girl Scouts are planning a trip to the movies later this month, followed in July to a Kane County Cougars game. They are also planning a pool party at Spring Lake in August.
Jodee Craven, HUB Project Grant Manager, also remarked on the event.
“The color run was a huge hit with the kids. Our Girl Scouts did a wonderful job organizing the event, making the notes, creating the color and manning the color stations,” Craven said. “It was a great way to celebrate the last week of HUB, get a little exercise and eat some popsicles at the end. It’s been another successful summer session and I hope the kids made some great memories.”
