MORRIS — Junior Carson Lewis sent an RBI groundout to first base that drove in the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team’s lone run during Wednesday’s Interstate 8 matchup at Morris.

The Redskins held Rochelle to five hits and scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to hand the Hubs an 8-1 loss in the second game of the conference series. Rochelle (4-12, 0-8 Interstate 8) remains winless in the Interstate 8 and will attempt to avoid a third straight sweep in conference play on Thursday evening, when the Hubs host Morris for the third game.

Nazim Baftiri walked and scored on an error to give the Redskins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Morris extended its lead with a six-run surge in the bottom of the fourth inning, where Jack Wheeler and Merek Klicker each slapped RBI singles. Anthony Xydakis reached on a fielder’s choice to give the Redskins a 7-1 lead, which grew after Morris tallied one run on a pair of singles, including an RBI single from Xydakis, in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Rochelle avoided the shutout with one run in the top of the seventh inning, where freshman Brody Bruns and sophomore Brode Metzger smacked back-to-back singles to start the frame. Bruns scored on an RBI groundout from Lewis two batters later. Senior Dylan Whaley started on the mound for the Hubs, throwing two and one-third innings while striking out four batters.

Junior Brandyn Metzger closed the game with two and two-thirds innings of relief while striking out two batters and limiting the Redskins to one unearned run on three hits with no walks.
