GENESEO — Brandon Johnson’s stellar pitching performance pushed the Rochelle varsity baseball team over Geneseo on Monday, when the Hubs teed off their three-game conference set with the Maple Leafs.
The senior left-hander nearly tossed a complete game, throwing six and one-third innings and allowing only two hits and one run while striking out a season-high 14 batters. Johnson added one RBI at the plate, and Rochelle defeated Geneseo by a score of 3-1 to extend its win streak to seven games. The Hubs improved to 11-2 overall.
Senior Noah Knight led off with a triple in the first inning before scoring on an RBI groundout by Johnson to put Rochelle ahead 1-0. Senior Johnny Beck sent an RBI triple to deep center in the third inning that scored Johnson and gave the Hubs a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, junior Ethan Etes reached on an RBI infield single that brought Beck home.
Geneseo went scoreless over the first five innings before scratching one run on one single and an error in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Cody Johnson took the mound with one out in the seventh inning and recorded the final two outs to earn the save and secure the Rochelle victory.
