Wrestling: Hubs hold off Princeton in season finale

PRINCETON — The Rochelle Hub varsity wrestling team traveled for its final dual match of the 2023-24 season on Thursday. Rochelle outlasted the Princeton Tigers 44-32 in nonconference action to conclude the regular season with a 23-6 overall record and a 5-0 record in the Interstate 8 Conference. The Hubs will host the IHSA 2A Rochelle Individual Regional on Saturday, Feb. 3 at RTHS.

Princeton claimed the first win of the dual, with Augustus Swanson scoring a second-period fall over sophomore Freddie Hernandez in the 106-pound bout. Sophomore Keagan Albers took a forfeit in the 113-pound bout and sophomore Tony Milburn followed with a reversal-to-fall combination against Jaydon Cooke to claim the 120-pound bout and put the Hubs up 12-6.

Junior Xavier Villalobos continued the momentum with a first-period takedown and a second-period fall over Kaydin Gibson to win the 126-pound bout. Sophomore Deegan Schabacker took a forfeit in the 132-pound bout, giving Rochelle a 24-6 lead before Princeton's Ace Christiansen secured a 15-0 technical fall over freshman Josh Lassiter to take the 138-pound bout.

Sophomore Brenden Voight won the 144-pound bout for the Hubs, notching a first-period takedown and fall over Abram Longeville. Princeton took the next two matches, with Michael Kurth outlasting freshman Angel Hernandez for a 15-13 sudden victory in overtime during the 150-pound bout and Preston Arkels securing a fall over junior Matt Lynn in the 157-pound bout.

Junior Grant Gensler put the Hubs ahead 33-20 with a hard-fought win over Casey Etheridge in the 165-pound bout, scoring a 3-1 decision after a third-period takedown. Sophomore Roman Villalobos followed with a first-period takedown and fall over Graysen Rockey in the 175-pound bout and senior Brock Metzger dominated the 190-pound bout against Arthur Burden, compiling three takedowns and three near falls for a  16-1 technical fall.

Princeton won the final two matches of the evening, with Ian Morris recording a first-period fall over senior Frank Decena in the 215-pound bout and Cade Odell scoring a first-period fall over senior Carlos Tomas in the 285-pound bout.
