ROCHELLE — Junior Lauren Dyer smacked an opposite-field single with no outs in the bottom of the second inning to help the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team avoid a no-hit shutout during the program’s Interstate 8 Conference opener against Ottawa on Monday evening.

The Pirates tallied three runs on three separate occasions to score a 10-0 run-rule win over the Lady Hubs. Ottawa took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, where Hailey Larsen belted a solo home run to start the game and Maura Condon laced an RBI double to score Piper Lewis. Bobbi Snook capped off the three-run frame with an RBI single that drove Condon home.

Rochelle (3-4, 0-1 Interstate 8) shut the Pirates down in the second inning, but Ottawa bounced back with one run on Kendall Lowery’s solo home run in the top of the third inning. The Pirates went ahead 7-0 after three runs in the top of the fourth inning, where Condon slapped a two-run single and Snook added another run on an RBI groundout.

Ottawa capped off its win with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, where two players scored on passed balls for the Pirates. Dyer threw the first four frames for the Lady Hubs, striking out two batters. Freshman Emma Heller added one inning of relief in the circle, striking out two batters and allowing one hit.
