ROCHELLE — Sophomore Kylie McCullough delivered a trio of crucial strikes as the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity bowling team looked to close out a tight match against Kaneland on Tuesday.

With an Interstate 8 Conference series victory on the line, Rochelle and Kaneland split the first two games, but the Lady Hubs maintained a slim lead in the overall series as the two teams entered the third and final game. As the match wound down, McCullough stepped up in the 10th frame and rallied off three consecutive strikes to finish the game with her series-best 178.

While McCullough’s strong finish wasn’t enough for the Lady Hubs to win the third game, her efforts did enable Rochelle to hold on to the series victory, with the Lady Hubs edging Kaneland 2,652-2,606. When asked what motivated her to come through for her team, McCullough, who concluded the match with a 503 series score, was quick to credit her fellow teammates.

“My teammates were there to support me and it felt good to win,” McCullough said. “I like our team. It’s mostly the same team as last year, but we have new girls who are very bubbly and loud and it’s been fun to be with them. We’re all working together and we’re all supporting each other… Our goal this season is to make it back to the sectional meet as a team.”

The Knights emerged with a slight lead after the first game, which Kaneland won 873-847 behind a series-best 185 from Grace Fincham. Junior Cassidy Vincent rolled a series-best 187 for the Lady Hubs (4-2, 3-2 Interstate 8), while McCullough followed with a 150 and senior Anahi Alanis totaled a 145. Rochelle claimed the second game 939-853, surging ahead in the series total behind a series-best 223 from senior Faith Adams and a 175 from McCullough.

The Lady Hubs held a 60-pin advantage entering the third and final game of the series, which Kaneland took 880-866. Emma Pernice and Kymora Simmons rolled respective scores of 173 and 172 for the Knights, while Preslee Sutherland added a 170. Despite winning two of the three games, Kaneland was unable to rally back and secure the series victory, as Vincent’s 179, McCullough’s 178 and a series-best 154 from Alanis were enough to help Rochelle hold on.

Vincent finished with a team-high 505 series for the Lady Hubs, who will return to action on Wednesday, when Rochelle hosts Sterling at T-Byrd Lanes. Adams added a 489 series score.
