Wednesday evening was a pivotal match in the Interstate 8 Conference, as the Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team looked to bounce back from a loss against LaSalle-Peru and remain near the top of the conference standings with a win over Sycamore. While the Hubs took the first game from the Spartans, Sycamore rallied to claim both the second and third games as well as the series total, handing Rochelle a 3,300-3,087 defeat at T-Byrd Lanes.

ROCHELLE — Wednesday evening was a pivotal match in the Interstate 8 Conference, as the Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team looked to bounce back from a loss against LaSalle-Peru and remain near the top of the conference standings with a win over Sycamore. While the Hubs took the first game from the Spartans, Sycamore rallied to claim both the second and third games as well as the series total, handing Rochelle a 3,300-3,087 defeat at T-Byrd Lanes.

Sophomore Andrew Powell led the Hubs (8-6, 4-3 Interstate 8) with a 621 series, while junior Logan Frye added a 538 series and senior Christian Thorne rolled a 527 series. Rochelle held the series lead after winning the first game 1,099-928. Senior Jon Alanis fired a series-best 211 in the opening game, while Powell followed with a series-best 208 for the Hubs.

Sycamore fought back into the series with an 1,173-1,034 victory during the second game, where Spencer Mallory threw a 237 and Owen Meier fired a series-best 226. With an Interstate 8 series win on the line, the Spartans delivered in the third and final game, dominating Rochelle 1,199-954 behind a series-best 266 from Mallory, who finished with a team-high 645 series for the Sycamore side. Powell led the Hubs with scores of 207 and 206 in the second and third games.
