The Rochelle Middle School Math Team brought home the first place trophy from the Sauk Valley Regional MathCounts competition on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Edison Rodriguez, Liliana Lawrence, Arabella Marruffo and Mercy Hunley made up the winning team. They earned a spot in the State Competition held in Oswego on March 9.

Rodriguez took second place individually in the written round and Lawrence was third. Also placing in the countdown round were Marruffo, third and Kara Hull, fourth.

Brisa Nambo, Kara Hull and Cris Lawrence also will move on to the MathCounts State Meet based on the scores they achieved individually.

Alternates Daphne Wise and Savannah Goodrich, along with individuals Yazmin Cruz, Esme Brizuela, Olyvia Dettman, Zane Lawrence and Tristan Lawrence rounded out the RMS competitors.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to compete in the MathCounts competition. The students had so much fun and it really helps them hone their problem solving skills,” said coach Katie Queller-Zilis

The competition is sponsored by the Rock River Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and Sauk Valley Community College.
