Frye and Powell earn All-Conference honors for the season

PERU — Junior Logan Frye wasn’t expecting to hear his name called as awards were handed out at the conclusion of the Interstate 8 Conference Boys Bowling Tournament on Wednesday.

Entering the conference tournament with six points on the season, Frye fired a 599 series over his first three games before exploding for a 672 series over his final three games. The Rochelle junior shined with a series-best 255 in his sixth and final game of the tournament, which not only enabled him to win the tournament by one pin, but secure All-Conference First Team honors for the second straight season. Frye finished with a 1,271 series to lead all Rochelle bowlers.

“I found a spot that worked for the whole day,” Frye said. “I only moved maybe twice throughout the day and I threw the same ball… I wasn’t doing so well in the fifth game and even though I was hitting the pocket, I wasn’t striking. I felt like something opened up for me in the sixth game and I was striking, even when I was hitting the higher side or the lighter side of the pocket.”

Despite a slow start to the tournament, Frye nearly averaged 200 over his first three games, shooting respective scores of 156, 224 and 219. The right-handed junior began his second series with scores of 223 and 194 before rising up the tournament standings with his series-best 255 in the final game. Frye edged Kaneland’s Jack Bingley, who shot a 1,270, for the crown.

“My confidence goes up after this,” Frye said. “I’m excited to see our new team next year, but I’m going to miss our current team and I’m going to miss the seniors like Jon, Christian [Thorne] and Sam… I think we’ll do alright and all we can ask for is that we go out and try our best.”

Rochelle took third out of five teams with a 6,428 final score in the conference tournament. The Hubs (10-7, 5-3 Interstate 8) finished second for the season, with three bowlers landing on the All-Conference roster. Sophomore Andrew Powell clinched All-Conference First Team honors for the second straight season, throwing a 1,220 series in the tournament to take second in the individual standings for the season. Frye finished tied for fifth in the individual standings.

“I just go out there and bowl as best as I possibly can,” Powell said. “I liked how the lanes were breaking down for me and I felt like my ball was going to hit the pocket no matter what I did. I did what I needed to do. I thought I was more confident in myself this season and my goal for next season is to go to the state meet… I just have to take things day by day.”

Senior Sam Tracey earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention for the season, finishing eighth in the individual standings after rolling a 1,097 series at the conference tournament. Tracey started strong, totaling a 619 series over the first three games with scores of 201, 225 and 193. Senior Jonathan Alanis added a 1,040 series with high scores of 234 and 205, while sophomores Levi Waddle and Declan McGee added series scores of 948 and 852.
