Little League: Junior League Baseball All-Stars advance to Illinois Little League State Championship

The Rochelle Little League 14U Baseball All-Stars finished 1-1 at the Sterling Sub-State Championship tournament on Saturday, defeating Twin Rivers 11-9 before falling 9-8 against LaSalle. Rochelle successfully qualified for the Illinois Little League Junior League State Championship tournament, which will begin on Wednesday at Floyd J. Tilton Park in Rochelle.

RTHS hosts 2021 Rochelle Summer Tennis Tournament

Local tennis players of all ages gathered at Rochelle Township High School on Saturday for the 2021 Rochelle Summer Tennis Tournament. Several winners were crowned across multiple divisions including men’s, women’s, senior, adult, high school and junior high.

Little League: 11U Baseball All-Stars medal at Illinois Little League State Championship

The Rochelle Little League 11U Baseball All-Stars bowed out of the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament this past weekend, finishing 1-2 over three games. Rochelle won over Bradley-Bourbonnais by forfeit before falling 4-0 against Western Springs in the second round. Rochelle battled Paris in the consolation bracket on Monday, losing 12-0.

Rochelle Rampage: 8U team takes third at Sandwich Summer Slam

The Rochelle Rampage 8U baseball team took third place in the Sandwich Summer Slam this past weekend. Rochelle went 2-2-1 over five games, defeating Somonauk 17-13 and Sandwich 14-5 while also drawing Yorkville 16-16. Rochelle conceded two losses against Sycamore teams.

Rochelle Rays: Swim team holds Family Olympics meet

The Rochelle Rays Swim Team wrapped up the 2021 summer season with its Family Olympics meet at Spring Lake Pool on Thursday, July 22. Members of the Rochelle Rays united with family members and local swimmers to compete in a variety of events including inner tube relays, T-shirt relays, kickboard relays and corkscrew relays. The meet also featured individual events for ages 3-99, a $100-plus coin drive and a biggest splash competition.

Football: Hubs host annual Lift-A-Thon event

Strength and conditioning has been a staple of the Rochelle Township High School football program for many years. On Tuesday, Hub fans, parents and members of the Rochelle community had a chance to watch RTHS student-athletes compete in a variety of weightlifting and performance tests in an outdoor setting while raising money for the Hub football program.

Little League: 10U Softball All-Stars battle at Illinois Little League State Championship

The Rochelle Little League 10U Softball All-Stars battled at the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament this past weekend, finishing 1-2 with losses against Plainfield and Beardstown as well as a victory over Moline. Rochelle fell 16-0 against Plainfield on Friday before beating Moline 17-7 on Saturday and losing 15-0 to Beardstown on Sunday.

The Rochelle Little League 14U Baseball All-Stars went 3-0 to win the Illinois Little League District 19 Championship tournament earlier this week. Rochelle took down Rock Falls 17-3 in the first round on Friday before defeating Sterling 10-9 on Saturday to reach the final round. Rochelle faced Sterling again on Monday, winning 11-1 to clinch the title. The Rochelle 14U Baseball All-Stars will advance to compete in the Rock Falls Sub-State tournament.

After two successful seasons with the Kishwaukee College men’s soccer program, former Rochelle Township High School standout Josue Almaraz will turn his attention to academics as he wraps up his associate’s degree and continues to work toward an education in radiology.

Rochelle Rays: Swim team hosts community meet

The Rochelle Rays Swim Team hosted its community swim meet on Thursday, July 15 at Spring Lake Pool. Two swimmers have set new records this season including Joah Horner (9-10 Boys Butterfly in 18.12 seconds) and Emma Kennay (13-14 Girls Butterfly in 34.90 seconds). Several swimmers have achieved personal-best times this season as well.

Little League: 12U Baseball All-Stars compete at Moline Sectional Championship

The Rochelle Little League 12U Baseball All-Stars concluded their postseason run at the Illinois Little League Moline Sectional Championship tournament this past weekend. Rochelle (1-2) opened the tournament with a 5-4 loss against Oglesby on Thursday before beating Moline 11-5 on Friday. Rochelle faced Oglesby again on Saturday, falling 3-2.

Little League: 10U Baseball All-Stars bow out at Elgin Sub-State Championship

The Rochelle Little League 10U Baseball All-Stars went 1-2 at the Illinois Little League Elgin Sub-State tournament this past weekend. Rochelle took down Moline 9-7 on Friday before falling 11-4 against Peru on Saturday and losing 14-0 to Huntley on Sunday.

Girls Basketball: Lundquist adjusts to new role at St. Ambrose

Abby Lundquist made her mark on the Rochelle Lady Hub basketball program with her scoring and shooting, setting several records including the all-time career scoring record. But it was Lundquist’s defense and facilitating that allowed her to stand out during her second season of collegiate basketball and her first with the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees.

In another indication that athletics are returning to normal in the Hub City, head coach Kyle Kissack and members of the Rochelle Township High School football program teamed up to hold their annual youth skills camp for third through eighth-grade players.

Football: Ricketts shines in short sophomore season

For Rochelle Township High School graduate Greg Ricketts, two football games were better than none. While several colleges and universities across the country canceled their entire 2020 football seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ricketts had an opportunity to compete in a condensed two-game spring season for Central College in Pella, Iowa earlier this year.

The Rochelle Little League 10U Softball All-Stars forced a winner-take-all matchup against Freeport for the Illinois Little League District 19 Championship. Rochelle outlasted Freeport 28-17 in a wild back-and-forth affair on Saturday to force another game on Monday. The winner will advance to the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament.

Little League: 10U Softball All-Stars take down Sterling

The Rochelle Little League 10U Softball All-Stars defeated Sterling 18-8 on Friday to continue their run at the Illinois Little League District 19 Championship tournament. Ella Behrens struck out six batters over three innings pitched, while Mya Martinez added two strikeouts. Martinez went 4-for-4 with one triple and six RBIs to lead the Rochelle offense. Chloe Escatel singled twice and recorded two RBIs, while Nevaeh Rodriguez added two RBIs.

Rochelle will advance to the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament in Moline beginning Saturday, July 24.

Rochelle Lady Hub softball player Kendal Ansteth has signed to continue her academics and her athletics with Kishwaukee College next year. A two-time Interstate 8 Academic All-Conference honoree, Ansteth plans to study nursing in hopes of becoming a labor and delivery nurse.

A sixth-inning surge propelled the Rochelle Little League 12U Baseball All-Stars to a first-round victory over Rock Falls in the Illinois Little League District 19 Championship tournament. After five scoreless frames to start the matchup, Rochelle rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth inning before shutting Rock Falls down in the bottom half to win 4-0.
