Swimming: Cole medals twice at IHSA Byron Sectional

Rochelle senior Alli Cole was disappointed when she learned she would be unable to represent her school in the IHSA State Championships for the fourth straight season due to the coronavirus. The Lady Hub swimmer didn’t allow the tough news to hold her back from capping off her career with a tremendous effort during the IHSA Byron Sectional on Saturday.

Headon honors heroes during virtual Marine Corps Marathon

Twenty-five miles for the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. One mile for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Angela Madsen and two-tenths of a mile for her late grandfather Sgt. John Kevin LaRue. Those precious souls weighed heavily on Aubrey Headon’s mind as she pushed herself to complete her first-ever Marine Corps Marathon virtually at Helms Park on Sunday.

Cross Country: Rochelle harriers race at IHSA 2A Belvidere Regionals

Lady Hub cross country standout Sara Johnson had a tremendous start to her junior season before a brief illness slowed her down a few weeks before the IHSA 2A Belvidere Regionals on Saturday. Despite missing some time, Johnson was determined to push through the course at Belvidere High School and earn her third consecutive trip to the sectional round.

Golf: Jones reflects on first semester with Kishwaukee College

Rochelle graduate Hayden Jones received his first taste of collegiate golf this fall, competing with the Kishwaukee College team under new head coach Thomas Brennan. Both Brennan and Jones are RTHS alums and former Hub golfers. Additionally, Brennan and Jones are both left-handers, and the two have already formed a strong bond over the first half of the golf season.

Basketball: RTHS teams taking advantage of fall contact days

Although the fate of the 2020-21 winter sports season remains in the balance, Rochelle Township High School’s Hub and Lady Hub basketball programs are taking advantage of their fall contact days and preparing as if they’ll be taking the courts this winter.

IHSA board eyes Oct. 28 for winter sports announcement

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met for its regularly scheduled virtual meeting on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, where the board provided a timetable on winter sports decisions, and also voted to provide a one-time accommodation to the IHSA’s Independent Team By-law (3.100) in some sports. The Board set a special board meeting for Oct. 28 to announce more details about winter sports.

The only way that Lady Hub tennis players Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young could reach the third round of the IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional on Friday was to defeat two doubles players from Freeport who bested them in match play earlier in the week.

Golf: Hubs push through unprecedented season

Head coach Glen Mehrings wasn’t sure what to expect from his players when the Rochelle Township High School golf program teed off the 2020 season in August. While the COVID-19 pandemic limited practice opportunities during the spring and summer, the Hubs pushed through the unprecedented circumstances and posted a six-win season along the way.

Girls Tennis: Lady Hubs drop season finale against Freeport

The Lady Hub tennis team played its final regular season match Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-1 against the Freeport Pretzels in nonconference action to end the 2020 campaign with a 6-12 record. Rochelle will host the IHSA 1A Sectional on Friday.

RTHS grad Headon sets new long jump world record

Aubrey Headon had been training hard to compete in the virtual Marine Corps Marathon this year. While the RTHS graduate and U.S. Paralympic track and field standout still plans to race in the event later this month, she temporarily halted her training so she could link up with her high school field event coach, Vic Worthington, and prepare for the 2020 Texas vs. The World track and field competition in Marble Falls, Texas, roughly 1,100 miles south of the Hub City.

Girls Tennis: Lady Hubs finish sixth at Interstate 8 Championship

The Lady Hub tennis team battled in the Interstate 8 Conference Championship meet Saturday afternoon, scoring six points to finish the tournament in sixth place. Juniors Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson led Rochelle with a fifth-place performance in the No. 3 doubles bracket, taking home two points for the Lady Hubs in the meet.
