State of Illinois loosens restrictions on bowling centers

Bowling centers, including Rochelle’s T-Byrd Lanes, received good news this past weekend after the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association reached an agreement with the state to loosen restrictions on the maximum capacity allowed inside facilities.

Wrestling: Nadig eyes state title after impressive first season with Hubs

Wrestling standout Caleb Nadig wasted no time ingratiating himself with the Rochelle Township High School varsity program. Nadig didn’t need long to emerge as an instant-impact starter for the Hubs either, winning over 30 matches and bringing home not only an Interstate 8 Conference Championship, but an IHSA 2A Regional Championship as well.

There won't be youth football played in the Hub City this fall after Rochelle Junior Tackle administrators announced the cancellation of the 2020 season on the organization's Facebook page Sunday evening.

Golf: Thiravong wins 2020 Greater Rockford Women's Classic

Rochelle senior Megan Thiravong was underwhelmed with her qualifying-round performance in the 2020 Greater Rockford Women’s Classic this past weekend. Thiravong wasn’t expecting to make the Championship Flight, but after earning the No. 5 overall seed, the Lady Hub standout went to work against some of the best golfers in the area.

Cross Country: Seldal emerging as top runner for Hubs

Aiden Seldal didn’t lace up for the Rochelle Township High School cross country team until he was a sophomore, but he’s made significant strides over his last two years with the Hubs. Now a rising senior, Seldal will return for his third cross country season this fall, and he’ll be an early candidate to step up and fill a leadership role as Rochelle’s top varsity runner.

Boys Basketball: Warborg sharpening up shooting stroke

Rising senior Spencer Warborg adapted to being a role player on the Rochelle Township High School varsity basketball team this past season. While his minutes were limited, Warborg made a positive impact on the Hubs through his defense, hustle and occasional shooting.

Football: Larsen looking to expand role with Hubs

Crue Larsen has spent countless hours watching film and building strength in the weight room to prepare for his senior season with the Rochelle football team. Although Larsen didn’t see the field much in his first varsity season, the two-way player and special teams contributor is more motivated than ever to rise up and make a greater impact for the Hubs next season.

IHSA board approves modified 2020-21 athletic schedule

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met for a special meeting on July 29, 2020, where the board announced its intended plans for the 2020-21 school year. The plan has been sent to the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) for final approval.

Wrestling: Team-first attitude keys Thompson's success

Although an early-season injury initially slowed down Rochelle Township High School wrestler Grant Thompson, the 132-pounder worked his way back to finish his third varsity season as not only one of the best grapplers in the conference, but in the region as well.

Golf: Kirk swinging for strong senior season

Despite not carrying a single senior on its varsity roster, the Rochelle Township High School golf team managed to record its best season in recent years, winning six dual matches. The Hubs are set to return a pair of seniors this fall including third-year varsity player Reese Kirk, who will be striving to become one of the top golfers in the Interstate 8 Conference.

Boys Track: Dobbs resigns as RTHS head coach

John Dobbs has been synonymous with Rochelle Township High School track and field for over two decades. Since becoming the head coach of the Hubs in the early 2000s, Dobbs has worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of student-athletes while helping many of them achieve school records, earn conference medals and qualify for the IHSA State Championships.

IHSA postpones board meeting to next week

With the scheduled start of the fall sports season only weeks away, the IHSA has postponed its upcoming board meeting to Wednesday, July 29 as executive director Craig Anderson plans to meet with IDPH and ISBE officials this Friday. The IHSA board meeting had been scheduled for July 22.

Volleyball: Green commits to Cornell College

Rochelle Township High School rising senior Clare Green has committed to the NCAA Division III Cornell College volleyball program, and she will be continuing her academics and athletics in Mount Vernon, Iowa after she graduates in the RTHS Class of 2021.

Boys Basketball: Burdin building off strong shooting season

Shooting 3-pointers has been a strength of Garrett Burdin’s game since he debuted on the Rochelle Township High School varsity basketball team his sophomore season. An IHSA Sectional 3-Point Shootout qualifier this past year, Burdin will be working to expand his skills on both ends of the floor as he prepares for an even larger role with the Hubs as a rising senior.

Fairways Golf Course finishes second in 98th Annual Lincoln Highway Tournament

Thomas Brennan and his Fairways Golf Course teammates had been looking forward to winning the Lincoln Highway Tournament on their home course for nearly a decade. When the opening round of the 98th installment of the event concluded in Rochelle on Saturday, Brennan and the Fairways team appeared to be in the driver’s seat.

Bowling centers challenging state guidelines

When Illinois entered Phase 4 of Gov. J.B Pritzker’s Restore Illinois economic reopening strategy, many businesses around the state including gyms, retail stores and restaurants were allowed to reopen at 50 percent capacity. Bowling centers like Rochelle’s T-Byrd Lanes haven’t received that same guidance, however, and a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association will seek to amend the current limitations.

Girls Tennis: McGee making strides on the court

Developing a stronger forehand stroke led to more success on the court for Lady Hub tennis player Sawyer McGee. As the rising senior prepares for her third varsity season, she’ll be looking to turn her racket the other way and build up her backhand stroke.

Wrestling: Practice makes perfect for Pineda

Rochelle lightweight Ivan Pineda faced many challenges early in his wrestling career with the Hubs. The 106-pounder immediately became a varsity starter as a first-year competitor, and without a consistent wrestling partner in the mat room, experience was tough to gain.
