Wrestling: Hubs run into tough competition at DeKalb event

ROCHELLE — Rochelle Township High School’s varsity wrestling team competed in three dual matches Friday at the DeKalb Don Flavin Championships, dropping all of them against highly ranked 3A opponents and taking eighth place overall.
The Hubs lost 60-18 against St. Charles East, while also falling 61-12 to Joliet and 57-20 to Crystal Lake South.
St. Charles East jumped out to a big advantage over Rochelle, taking the first 11 bouts of which four were forfeits.
Noah Messer earned six points for Rochelle in the 182-pound class after winning by forfeit, and then Rochelle’s Ben Harvey won in the 195-pound class by pin fall over Wyatt Gundlach to give the Hubs six more points.
Gavin Ansteth closed things out for the match earning six points on a forfeit at 220 pounds.
Joliet match

Things didn’t get much easier for Rochelle in its match against Joliet on Friday, as the Hubs managed just three bout wins.
Keegan Davis scored three points for Rochelle when he recorded an 8-2 decision over Joliet’s Tyler Holmes in the 132-pound class.
Rochelle’s Bryan Garza also tallied three points for the Hubs when he pulled out an impressive 5-4 decision over Ke’Andre Wiley in the 170-pound weight class.
Harvey closed out the Rochelle scoring when he won a decision by forfeit in the 182-pound class.
Crystal Lake
Davis, Garza and Harvey again were on the winning end of their matches against Crystal Lake, while Rochelle’s Zeke Horn also posted a win in the loss to Crystal Lake.
Davis won a major decision (8-0) over Aidan Kitchen in the 132-pound class, while Garza posted a major decision over Tadd Mears in the 170-pound class.
Harvey won by pin fall over Brady Weidner in the 182-pound class and Horn also won by pin fall over KT Sivertsen in the 160-pound class.
