ROCHELLE — A slow start spelled trouble for the Lady Hub varsity volleyball team on Tuesday, when Rochelle hosted its Interstate 8 Conference rematch with the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers.

After defeating LaSalle-Peru on Saturday, Rochelle looked for the season sweep this week. But the Cavaliers emerged with more energy toward the start of the match, ultimately winning in two sets as the Lady Hubs fell 16-25, 23-25. Senior Clare Green totaled 21 assists and seven digs, while junior Sylvia Hasz recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. Senior Ellie Kinn finished with eight digs for the Lady Hubs (6-7), who face Morris on the road Thursday.

“We started slow and we could tell that they really wanted this win after we got them on Saturday,” head coach Molly Sly said. “They wanted it more from the beginning and we missed some key serves when we were starting to gain some momentum. I thought our second set was a heck of a lot better and both Clare [Green] and Sylvia [Hasz] came up huge for us down the stretch. They were responsible for about our last 10 points or so and that was fun to see.”

LaSalle-Peru opened the first set on a 10-4 run, with several balls dropping easily on the Rochelle side of the court. Missed serves and net violations also created issues for the Lady Hubs in the opening set, as the Cavaliers surged ahead 19-11 before Rochelle generated some positive plays courtesy of big blocks from senior Afi Gati in the middle. With Kinn on the serve, Rochelle cut the LaSalle-Peru lead to six points and forced two Cavalier timeouts in succession.

But LaSalle-Peru scored three straight points with a 22-16 advantage to close out the first set. After Rochelle fell behind 9-3 in the second set, Hasz and Green came alive for the Lady Hubs, working together to compile several points and keep Rochelle within striking distance of the Cavaliers, who maintained roughly a three-point lead throughout the set. Rochelle made it a 24-23 match after a kill from Hasz, but the Cavaliers scored one final point to win the match.

Morris

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity volleyball team faced Morris on the road Thursday, falling 21-25, 20-25 and dropping to 6-8 on the season. Senior Clare Green totaled 20 assists, while junior Sylvia Hasz netted 15 kills and seven digs.
