Volleyball: Lady Hub blockers shine in loss to Kaneland

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity volleyball team had to be tough on the blocks when Kaneland’s talented offensive attack came to town for an Interstate 8 matchup Tuesday.

Junior middle hitter Payton Hale led the Lady Hubs on the front line, recording three blocks in Rochelle’s 13-25, 14-25 loss to the Knights on Tuesday. Junior Addie Friestad racked up a team-leading eight service points for the Lady Hubs, who dropped to 12-15 overall with the loss.

“We did a great job of staying on their shoulders,” head coach Molly Sly said. “Our middles moved really well tonight to seal the block and both Payton and Kennedy [Adamski] both did a great job of not letting them get the ball back over the net. Whenever there was a back-and-forth rally, that rally ended up with a block from one of those two which was nice to see.”

Kaneland opened both sets with 6-0 runs on Tuesday, taking early leads and opening the first set with an 11-2 advantage. The Lady Hubs mustered a brief run late in the first set, with junior Macy Ramos scoring three of her four service points in the match for a 3-0 Rochelle rally despite Kaneland leading 22-10. Looking for some positive energy, Rochelle bounced back early in the second set, bringing Kaneland within two points at 9-7 with Friestad on the serve.

“If we can block the way we did tonight during regionals, I think that will light a fire under our girls,” Sly said. “We need to feed off of that energy. I thought Macy serve-received really well tonight and I was excited to see her play well against a really good team tonight.”

Kaneland quickly answered with a 5-0 run of its own to take control of the second set and ultimately seal the win. Junior Cassandra Garcia finished with five digs and five service points for Rochelle, while junior Isela Vasquez totaled three digs, two assists and three service points.
