ROCHELLE — VFW entered the Rochelle Little League Major League Boys Championship Series as the No. 1 seed, and the team had no issues when it took on No. 4 seed Rotary Club Wednesday evening.
Behind a seven-run first inning, VFW (16-0) cruised to a 12-2 victory over Rotary Club (10-8) in five innings. VFW will face No. 3 seed Kiwanis Club in the championship series beginning Monday.
Four consecutive singles ignited the VFW offense in the bottom of the first inning. Garrett Gensler and Brandyn Metzger singled at the top of the batting order, and both Noah Lara and Colton O’Rorke singled to keep the scoring threat alive. Grant Gensler walked with one out, and Gensler scored on a double by Carson Lewis. Tommy Tourdot and Anlun Meyers also reached base, with Tourdot scoring VFW’s seventh run of the frame.
After totaling two hits in the top of the first inning including singles by Alex Burnette and Jacob Andrist, Rotary Club went away quietly until Landon DeLille and Ben Clark both scored on a single by Braden Hunley in the fourth inning to cut VFW’s lead to 7-2. VFW responded with three runs in the bottom half to increase its lead to 10-2, and the No. 1 seed added two more in the fifth to end the game by run limit.
