ROCHELLE — It may have been a bit windy, but Saturday’s conditions proved to otherwise be perfect for the 41st Annual Hub Relays at Rochelle Township High School.

The Hubs defended their home field quite well, placing second overall with 106 points to edge out nonconference rival Dixon, who took third place with 104. Harlem won the event with 134 points.

Senior Andrew Myers stole the show in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-5 to take first with senior teammate Matthew Drendel finishing tied for second place with a leap of 6-0. Senior Michael Drendel tied for first in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-0 and recorded two top-3 finishes in the long jump (second at 18-10 ¾) and the triple jump (third at 39-4).

The Hubs finished fourth out of five teams in the 6400-meter relay, with freshmen Tucker Louis, Gyvanziel Quinonez, Santi Cordoba and Diego Escobar turning in a time of 22:21.31. Rochelle fared much better in the 3200-meter relay, taking third out of eight teams with Matthew Drendel and sophomores Jessee Infante, Connor Lenkaitis and Austin Walsh running a time of 8:50.92.

In the freshman-sophomore 400-meter relay, sophomore Hubs Greg Ricketts and Alex Louck teamed up with freshmen Evan Horner and Uzziel Zarate to place third out of seven groups with a time of 48.36. The varsity squad of seniors Levi Johnson, Lance Huftalin, junior Alex Harvey and sophomore Eddie Villalobos took fourth out of eight teams with a time of 45.77.

The distance medley relay team of Infante, sophomore Benjamin DaCosta, Lenkaitis and Cordoba finished third out of six teams with a time of 12:40.50, while the freshman-sophomore 800-meter relay team (Ricketts, Horner, Zarate, Louck) landed in fourth out of eight teams with a time of 1:42.96. Rochelle’s 1600-meter sprint medley relay team (junior Austin Tracey, Huftalin, Walsh and Matthew Drendel) took first place, beating out second-place Harlem with a time of 3:54.16.

Infante placed fifth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:10.56, and the senior Johnson took third in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 42.72. Wrapping up the day in the 1600-meter relay at the frosh/soph level were freshman Traevon Voss, Ricketts, DaCosta and Villalobos, who won with a time of 3:51.95. The varsity 1600-meter relay team placed third, with Matthew Drendel, Huftalin, Lenkaitis and Walsh running a time of 3:37.97.
