PERU — The Rochelle Township High School varsity boys and girls bowling teams each enjoyed success on the lanes this past Saturday, with the Lady Hubs qualifying two top-5 players and the Hubs adding one in the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic at the Illinois Valley Super Bowl.

The Lady Hubs finished fourth out of nine teams behind senior Katie Dummer, who took first place individually with a tournament-high 1,246 series. Dummer shot 235 to close her first three-games series of 609 before bowling 245 and 212 in her second series en route to 637. Senior Carlie Elder took fifth place individually with 1,105 pins and high games of 215 and 200.

“You’re always shooting for first, and when you place it’s a really nice feeling too,” Dummer said. “Medaling at any tournament feels great… You have to focus on what you’re doing and you can’t get too hyped up because you’re going to think too much. We just focused on taking things one shot at a time like coach [Joey Johanning] says.”

Senior Hope Palmer added 873 pins over six games, while senior Hunter Eckhardt and junior Autumn Headon combined for 1,479 pins. Rochelle totaled 4,703 pins to finish fourth behind LaSalle-Peru (4,832), Oregon (5,046) and Rockford East (5,062).

“Our energy was phenomenal on Saturday,” Dummer said. “I’m so proud of us for keeping our heads up… It felt so good to have a lot of energy, especially with all of the new girls we’ve brought on.”

The Rochelle boys placed ninth out of 12 teams with 5,707 pins knocked down. Junior Brady Shank led the Hubs with 1,305 pins to take fifth place individually, while junior Dallas Driver added 1,200 pins to place 23rd. Shank rolled 626 over his first three games before finishing strong with 679 over his last three games including his high score of 249.

“I was shaking when they were handing out awards at the end,” Shank said. “We didn’t know if I made the top-5 cut or not… I fought my way from 19th to fifth and knowing how hard I worked for that, it really boosted my confidence, especially going into the rest of our season.”

Junior Tyler Johnson finished 30th with 1,160 pins, and senior Tyler Nalley added 1,116 pins with a high game of 213. Senior Mark Bratko and freshman Keith Holland combined for 926 pins on Saturday.
