OPINION: Disagrees with council’s choice of appointment

Posted

Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the Rochelle News Leader article, June 26, regarding “Burke appointed to council.”
I support councilman Bil Hayes’ nay vote and comment that he supported ‘more diversity’ on the city council.

AnnMarie Green received 826 votes compared to Don Burke receiving 569. She expressed knowledge of the economic and social issues facing the city and expressed a defined vision for the future at the League of Women’s candidate forum. Don Burke did not attend the forum.
Most importantly, I was disappointed that the current council chose to ignore the vote of the citizens in the appointment of a council member. I believe it is very important to respect and honor the vote of the citizens and appreciate the value of diversity.
