Ogle County Sheriff’s Report: Jan. 17-27, 2023

OREGON — On Jan. 17 at approximately 9:23 p.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 4,000 block of South Illinois Route 2. After an investigation, deputies placed Steven Smith, 52, of Dixon, under arrest for possession of methamphetamine 15-100 grams (class one felony) and possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine (class X felony). Pursuant to the stop, the Ogle County Drug Task Force, comprised of sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Rochelle and Oregon Police Departments, obtained a search warrant for Smith’s residence.

On Wednesday, Jan. 19 at approximately 2 p.m., the Ogle County Drug Task Force, assisted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at 1130 White Rock Drive in rural Dixon. During the search, deputies located 27.5 grams of methamphetamine, 74.5 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 23.5 grams of cocaine, seven vials of testosterone steroids, drug paraphernalia and additional items used in the sale and distribution of narcotics.

Pursuant to the ongoing investigation, additional charges are pending against Steven B. Smith in Lee County.

On Jan. 25 at approximately 8:34 p.m. deputies initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of East Blackhawk Drive and Peru Street for no registration light and improper display of registration. Upon further investigation deputies arrested Tahj Gulley, 23, of Madison, Wisconsin, for unlawful use of a firearm and no valid license. Gulley was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. 

On Jan. 26 at approximately 6:09 p.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 106. After brief investigation, deputies arrested Koryun Travis, 36, of Rockford, for driving while license suspended and an active Rockford PD warrant. Travis was also issued a citation for an equipment violation. Travis was subsequently transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

On Jan. 26 at approximately 5:30 p.m. deputies initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Blackhawk Drive and Walnut Street in Byron for expired registration. Upon further investigation deputies arrested Carolyn Haye, 46, of Byron, for driving while license suspended. Haye was released on an individual bond with a future court date given.

On Jan. 27 at approximately 12:15 a.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 103. After brief investigation, deputies arrested Juan Mendez-Martinez, 19, of Rockford, for no valid driver's license and an active Ogle County warrant. Mendez-Martinez was also issued a citation for an equipment violation. Mendez-Martinez was subsequently transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

On Jan. 27 at approximately 12:26 a.m. deputies were advised of a domestic battery, which had occurred in the 4,000 block of East Illinois Route 72. After investigation deputies placed, William Upton, 50, of Byron, under arrest for aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery and violation of bond conditions. Upton was transported to the Ogle County Jail, where he was held pending a court appearance in front of a judge.

All individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty.
