SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. — Lloyd William Verhoeks, son of William Henry and Mary Ellen Cheadle Verhoeks and devoted husband of Jeannine Gagnier, was born April 2, 1927 in Clifton, IL. He entered his Heavenly Home on April 19, 2017 at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, Ariz., after a brief illness.
Lloyd attended Kankakee public schools and entered the U. S. Navy in May 1945, one month before graduating from Kankakee High School. His service in the South Pacific lasted about 18 months.
Upon his return to civilian life, he was employed by Beatrice Foods Co.’s Meadow Gold Ice Cream Plant in Kankakee where he progressed from a “gofer” to ice cream maker and was a delivery route man for several years before going to work for Interlocking Fence Co., forerunner of Morton Buildings, Inc. He retired from Morton’s Rochelle office in 1992 after 35 years of sales and some years in management.
During their stay in northern Illinois, Lloyd was baptized by immersion at Elim Baptist Church while a member of the First Covenant Evangelical Church in Rockford. A member of the congregation for over twenty years, he and his wife served as chairmen of the Covenant Companions, the elders’ group of the congregation, where they enjoyed (along with a loyal group of volunteers) planning day trips and in-house monthly programs for the seniors for five years.
In 1997, Lloyd and Jeannine moved to Sebring, Fla., and spent 15 years there where they were members of the First Christian Church, Avon Park.  In 2012 they moved to Sun City West, Ariz., to be near their son’s family.  Lloyd’s main interest in his retirement was baking bread and reading and he was a frequent library visitor.
He was predeceased by his parents; and siblings Victor, Virginia (Wilson) and Gene Avise.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Jeannine Gagnier; a daughter, Laura (Mrs. Terry) Norby; a son, Michael Lloyd (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Erin (Cero Zuccarello) Hanusa, Robert Lloyd (Crystal) Norby, Paul William Norby (Mathea Gray), William Adam (Emily Marie) Verhoeks, Emily Ann  (Jesse) DeMund and step-granddaughter Anna Norby Fiore. Great-grandchildren surviving are Dario Zuccarello, Madison Taylor, Audrey Elizabeth and Ryan James DeMund, Joshua Dean Verhoeks and step great grandson, Andrew Michael Reynolds along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
A memorial service was held at Heritage Tradition Senior Living Center at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, with Pastors Bruce Schipul and Larry Kelchner of Palm West Community Church officiating. Private burial in the Arizona National Cemetery followed on Friday morning.
