The Rochelle Little League 14U Baseball All-Stars finished 1-1 at the Sterling Sub-State Championship tournament on Saturday, defeating Twin Rivers 11-9 before falling 9-8 against LaSalle. Rochelle successfully qualified for the Illinois Little League Junior League State Championship tournament, which will begin on Wednesday at Floyd J. Tilton Park in Rochelle.

Rochelle finishes 1-1 at Sterling sub-state tournament

STERLING — The Rochelle Little League 14U Baseball All-Stars finished 1-1 at the Sterling Sub-State Championship tournament on Saturday, defeating Twin Rivers 11-9 before falling 9-8 against LaSalle. Rochelle successfully qualified for the Illinois Little League Junior League State Championship tournament, which will begin on Wednesday at Floyd J. Tilton Park in Rochelle.

Twin Rivers

Ethan Goodwin started on the mound for Rochelle, throwing four innings and striking out eight batters. Mark Green entered in relief, logging three innings and finishing with two strikeouts. Twin Rivers took the early lead, scoring four runs on four singles in the top of the first inning. 

After Twin Rivers added one run in the top of the second inning, Rochelle scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Green drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Ryan Senne before Tony Milburn scored on an error. Twin Rivers extended its lead with two runs in the top of the third inning, but Rochelle responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Goodwin doubled and scored on an RBI single from Frankie Pelan before Jack Pavlak belted a two-RBI double to bring Pelan and Colten Manning home. Pavlak scored on an RBI single from Keagan Albers.

Trailing 7-6, Rochelle went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Caden Goodwin walked and scored on an RBI groundout by Pelan to tie the game at 7-7. After Green scored on a wild pitch, Gavin Neale smacked an RBI single to bring Ethan Goodwin home. Twin Rivers evened the game with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. An RBI single from Senne and a bases-loaded walk by Green plated two Rochelle runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

LaSalle

Frankie Pelan started for Rochelle, throwing five innings and striking out two batters on the mound. Rochelle took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Pelan brought Caden Goodwin home on an RBI single before Gavin Neale drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mark Green. Reece Harris plated Ethan Goodwin with a fielder’s choice grounder.

Back-to-back RBI doubles from Ethan Goodwin and Pelan plated two Rochelle runs in the top of the second inning. Trailing 5-0, LaSalle answered with three runs on two singles and one double in the bottom of the third inning. LaSalle tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead.

An additional two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning extended the LaSalle lead to 9-5. Rochelle finished strong with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ethan Goodwin singled and scored on an error before Ryan Senne’s RBI groundout brought Pelan home. Harris singled and scored on a passed ball to make it a 9-8 game. A lineout to the pitcher ended the game.
