Jen’s Walk to raise money to fight domestic violence

ROCHELLE — Family and friends of Jennifer Underhill are hoping to raise awareness of domestic violence while honoring her memory with the first ever “Jen’s Walk Against Domestic Violence.”

The 3K walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. on the bike path near the Atwood Park band shell. Pre-registration, until Sept. 12, is $15 and includes a T-shirt. After Sept. 12, registration is $18. T-shirts are guaranteed for pre-registration, and are also available for purchase separately for $12.

Proceeds from the walk will go to HOPE of Ogle County.

It’s been nearly a month since Underhill’s loved ones bid their farewell to the Rochelle resident and although the circumstances surrounding her death are tragic, they continue to honor her memory with positivity.

“I was on my morning walk, and it came to me. I thought we should just put together a walk,” said Sharon Brimhall, Underhill’s family member. “It took off from there.”

Registration forms are available at several area businesses and a Facebook page has been established with information on the event.

Brimhall hopes to make the walk an annual event.

Underhill’s sister, Tonia Underhill, expressed gratitude for the community’s support.

“She’s definitely watching over us knowing the things we, as a family and community, have done to come together to honor Jen’s life and her memory,” Tonia said. “I can only hope with all of us coming together to help raise awareness we can help make a difference for at least one person. I know Jen would be thankful.”
