Junior golfer becomes first girl in school history to win conference title

ROCHELLE — There weren’t any players who could keep up with Lady Hub junior Megan Thiravong when Rochelle Township High School hosted the Interstate 8 Conference Girls Golf Championship at Fairways Golf Course on Tuesday.

Thiravong used her knowledge of the home course to her advantage, firing 76 over 18 holes to win the tournament by five strokes. Thiravong made history with the victory, becoming the first RTHS female to ever win a conference championship. She placed second in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference her sophomore season after taking third as a freshman.

“It’s an honor to represent Rochelle,” Thiravong said. “We had such a great time today… The course was in great condition, especially with all the rain we’ve had recently. Playing this course all season long gave me the upper hand, and I knew where I needed to hit the ball.”

Thiravong carded 41 over the front nine, with her lone birdie coming on the par-5 eighth hole. The junior finished with 35 over the back nine to end the afternoon five strokes ahead of Plano’s Faith Malloy (81). Thiravong is the first RTHS player to win a conference title since Matthew Brennan shot 75 at Yorkville nine years ago.

“I think my putting has been pretty good recently and I think that’s helped my score,” Thiravong said. “Not getting on the green in regulation hurts some players, so getting those one-putts and two-putts into the hole are great advantages to have as I go through the rest of the season.”

Thiravong and the Hubs will play one more regular season tournament on Saturday before beginning the IHSA Regionals next week. Thiravong will compete in the IHSA Class 1A Stillman Valley Regional at Byron’s PrairieView Golf Club on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Boys

The Rochelle varsity golf team took seventh place out of eight teams in the Interstate 8 Conference Boys Golf Championship at Sugar Grove’s Bliss Creek Golf Club on Monday. Junior Reese Kirk led the Hubs with 94, while freshman Griffin Ohlinger added 101 with a back-9 score of 43. Sophomore Shepard Hayes finished with 104 and sophomore Levi Lawhorn totaled 112.

The Rochelle boys will participate in the IHSA Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Regional at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Course on Monday, Oct. 7.
