Golf: Hubs swing past Sandwich at Edgebrook

Thiravong cards season-low 38 in 176-204 victory

SANDWICH — Rochelle senior Megan Thiravong has been spending extra time working on her short-game fundamentals, and that additional effort resulted in her lowest score of the season when the Hubs faced Sandwich at Edgebrook Golf Course on Tuesday.

With Edgebrook presenting a similar course layout to her home course in Rochelle, Thiravong relied on her short game to shave additional strokes off her score. The Lady Hub standout had been carding scores in the low 40s throughout the season, but that changed Tuesday, when she led all Rochelle players with 38 and propelled the Hubs to a 176-204 victory over the Indians.

“I’ve been practicing with my dad lately,” Thiravong said. “We’ve been working on my short game and making sure I have those fundamentals down. My chipping and putting were definitely on point during the meet. If I missed the fairway, I knew I could still get on the green and one-putt to save par. The course was very narrow and there were a lot of trees, much like Rochelle, so I knew that accuracy would be key. I knew I would be safe if I kept the ball in the fairway.”

Tuesday marked Rochelle’s sixth win of the season, tying the team’s victory total over the past two seasons combined. Senior Reese Kirk aided the Hubs with 44 during the round, while sophomore Griffin Ohlinger recorded 45 and junior Brett Ferguson finished with 49. Rochelle (6-2, 2-2 Interstate 8) will host DeKalb on Thursday before facing LaSalle-Peru next Monday.

“It definitely shows how much our team has worked to stay in the game,” Thiravong said. “Our scores show we’re serious about golf and how much we enjoy being out here together.”
