LASALLE — The Rochelle girls tennis team took sixth place with five total points in the Interstate 8 Conference Varsity Championships at LaSalle-Peru Township High School on Saturday. The Lady Hubs will close out their season in the IHSA Class 1A Sectional at Boylan Catholic on Friday.
Senior Ruth Gardner finished sixth at No. 1 singles. Gardner fell 1-6, 1-6 against LaSalle-Peru’s Olivia Ernat in the opening round before dropping a close two-set match with Morris player Libby Wright (5-7, 2-6). Junior Anna Guevara took sixth at No. 2 singles, losing both matches by default.
Sophomores Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young finished sixth at No. 1 doubles. Young and Dickey took three games in the opening set of their 3-6, 0-6 loss against Sycamore’s Abby Krull and Alyssa Cooney. The girls then faced Kaneland’s Christel Lamera and Sofia Gonzalez-Magnabosco in the consolation round, losing 3-6, 0-6.
Junior Sawyer McGee and sophomore Emma Hicks finished sixth at No. 2 doubles. McGee and Hicks battled Kaneland’s Sarah Nguyen and Ally Mitchinson in the opening round, falling 2-6, 0-6 before losing a tough two-set match against Morris players Sophie Pfaff and Sophie Mennenga (5-7, 0-6).
Seniors Avri Olsen and Caitlin McMurray placed sixth at No. 3 doubles. Olsen and McMurray fell 2-6, 2-6 against LaSalle-Peru’s Olivia Woods and Karissa Etzenbach in the opening round before dropping a contested two-set match against Morris players Darcy Ancel and Madison Hughes (6-7, 2-6).
