ROCHELLE — The Rochelle girls tennis team honored its three senior players after its final home meet of the season against Aurora Central Catholic on Wednesday. Seniors Avri Olsen, Caitlin McMurray and Ruth Gardner were all recognized by head coach Lizzie Cartwright and their teammates after falling 3-2 to the Chargers and moving to 2-12 on the season.

Gardner scored Rochelle’s first point of the match, winning 10-7 at No. 1 singles. Junior Anna Guevara was shut out 0-10 at No. 2 singles.

“Ruth has been playing for the last three years and I was really happy to see her come out when she did,” Cartwright said. “It’s been great to see her develop her skills and become a hard hitter for our team.”

Junior Sawyer McGee and sophomore Emma Hicks earned Rochelle’s second point with a 10-8 victory at No. 2 doubles. Aurora Central Catholic claimed two doubles points in the match, as Lady Hub sophomores Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young fell 4-10 at No. 1 doubles while McMurray and Olsen fought hard but lost 7-10 at No. 3 doubles.

“Caitlin has been a sweetheart for the team and she’s always cheering for her teammates,” Cartwright said. “She’s been someone I can rely on and I appreciate all of the hard work she’s put in. Avri’s been a pleasant surprise coming out her senior year, and she’s developed her skills to where she was able to play at the varsity level and hold her own.”
