ROCHELLE — Strength and conditioning has been a staple of the Rochelle Township High School football program for many years. On Tuesday, Hub fans, parents and members of the Rochelle community had a chance to watch RTHS student-athletes compete in a variety of weightlifting and performance tests in an outdoor setting while raising money for the Hub football program.
Freshmen through seniors racked up the weights on Tuesday, completing multiple lifts including the bench press, power clean and back squat. Student-athletes also ran the 40-yard dash and had their vertical leaps measured. Those in attendance had the chance to sponsor a student-athlete with a $1 donation per pound or a flat donation. Any of those in attendance who donated $25 or more were entered into a raffle drawing for numerous RTHS football prizes.
“A lot of our football families were able to come out and see our kids compete,” Kissack said. “It was a great environment and we were thankful to have the opportunity to do that. Our strength and conditioning program has always been important and we’ve always maintained a high level of performance. A lot of that responsibility fell on the kids over the past school year, so I think this summer was important for getting our kids back in the weight room, especially those who were struggling, and our kids showed up ready to work and did a great job.”
The Hubs are less than one month away from kicking off the 2021 football season at Woodstock on Friday, Aug. 27. Rochelle will look to build on its 2-4 record from the shortened 2020 spring season earlier this year. The Hubs are also seeking their first postseason bid since 2018.
“We’ve seen maximum effort from our kids all summer,” Kissack said. “This summer was important for us and I’m happy with how our kids performed… We have such a supportive community for high school athletes. Our football families in this town have always supported Rochelle football and that’s not only the parents who have kids in our program, but our alumni, our neighbors and other parents who don’t have kids who are involved. We’ve always had wonderful support and we’re thankful for that. Our kids are recipients of that support.”
