DEKALB — By mid-November of each year, the Ellwood mansion in DeKalb is decked for the holidays. Tour guides lead visitors room-by-room and deliver the history of the home while guests delight in the gilt and stenciled ceilings, rich woodwork, and elegant holiday decorations.
Then, during the first weekend of December, things become even more festive as the mansion comes alive with twinkling lights, music, and the history of the Ellwood family, as told by tour guides in each room of the mansion.
Beginning Nov. 15, guests may take a guided tour of the decorated mansion by arriving in the Ellwood House visitor center on Tuesday through Thursday at 1 pm or 3 pm. and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., or 3 p.m. (Closed Thanksgiving day.)
Visitors may also attend the holiday event weekend by purchasing tickets and walking through the mansion at their leisure, viewing each room and listening to content by trained-guides stationed in each room.
The holiday event runs Friday Nov. 30 with entry anytime between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2 with entry anytime between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 6 to 17, and free for children under 6. Family membership is $35 per household and includes admission to the event. Memberships may be purchased onsite when visitors arrive
