ROCHELLE — The Rochelle School District 231 Board of Education voted to approve a budget for the 2017-18 school year during its monthly meeting at the Rochelle Middle School Media Center Tuesday evening.
The district will operate at a $714,494 deficit in its education fund and a $163,003 deficit in its transportation fund. The total budget balance will be $9,810,863, and the board approved the budget with the recommendation of Superintendent Todd Prusator.
“We’re still looking at a pretty significant deficit in our education fund,” Prusator said. “The new state formula has stopped us from being hurt by the state, but it hasn’t solved the inadequacies of what’s been happening over the past several years. It will take some time before we really start seeing definitive benefits from that.”
Rochelle School District 231’s total deficit is projected to be $625,082. Prusator said the elementary district is continuing discussions with Rochelle School District 212 about possible consolidation.
“We’re running a deficit which means we’re spending our fund balances down, and it’s just a matter of how long those will sustain us,” Prusator said.
