Illinois residents are advised to use caution when traveling outside.
Rochelle Community Hospital posted a frostbite warning on its Facebook page explaining it is caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Frostbite is most likely to affect body parts farther away from the body core such as feet, toes, fingers, nose and ears.

Frostnip symptoms include white patches of skin that are numb. Frostbite symptoms include skin that has turned white or grayish-yellow and feels hard, waxy or numb. Additional symptoms include swelling, itching, burning and deep pain during the rewarming process.
The hospital warns for those who think they may have frostbite to seek medical attention immediately.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency advises those who must go outside to wear loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. Cars should be stocked with extra clothing, blankets or sleeping bags, tow ropes, sack of sand or cat litter as well as non-perishable food and water.
