STEWARD — The 19th Annual Conor O’Rorke Memorial Basketball Tournament has been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to a Facebook post published by the tournament committee Monday morning. The tournament, which was founded in 2002 in honor of Conor O’Rorke, had been scheduled to be conducted this December at Steward Elementary School.
“It is with great and profound sadness that we are officially announcing the cancellation of this year’s Conor O’Rorke Memorial Basketball Tournament due to concerns surrounding the current pandemic,” the Facebook post read. “As you know, the tournament is one of great joy and prides itself on being a warm, welcoming, interactive, and fun family-focused event. Unfortunately, we feel we will not be able to safely and smartly hold the tournament and still embody the experience everyone has become accustomed to.”
The committee wrote that next year's tournament is scheduled for Dec. 4-5, 2021. The committee also wrote that any donations, that would have been made during this year’s tournament, be made directly to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in Conor O’Rorke’s name.
