ROCHELLE — Word spread quickly Thursday of the closing of the Rochelle Burger King. After serving Whoppers, flame broiled burgers and onion rings to the community since early 1995, restaurant owner Mark Malenchik abruptly closed the doors Thursday.
“With Wal-Mart moving across town it really changed the traffic pattern on Seventh Street, significantly hurting our sales,” Malenchik said Friday through e-mail. “We simply could not sustain the business any longer. It was simply a financial decision.”
Store employees, including general manager April Gittleson, were unaware of the plan to close the restaurant prior to Thursday.
“He gave us no warning at all,” she said. “He just came in and waited until we slowed down and told all of us we were done.”
