STEWARD ó A Canton man is dead after being dragged under his RV following an accident on Monday afternoon.

Jared A. Lafferty, 35, was pulled off the side of the northbound lanes of Interstate 39 after the RV he was driving suffered mechanical problems. According to the Illinois State Police report, Lafferty exited the RV and crawled underneath it to make the repairs.

At that same time, Chad Maske, 36, Milton, Wis., was northbound on the interstate and was attempting to change from the left to the right lane. Apparently, Maske drifted too far to the right and into the shoulder where he struck the parked RV. As the two vehicles collided, Lafferty was dragged approximately 80 feet under the RV. Maskeís semi truck then traveled another 342 feet before coming to rest.

Lafferty was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Shae Lafferty, 33, Canton, was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for non life-threatening injuries. Two children also were transported to the hospital for minor injuries, as was Maske.

The ISP was assisted at the scene by the Lee County Sheriff deputies, Illinois Department of Transportation, Rochelle Fire Department and Steward Fire Department.

Charges are pending and the accident remains under investigation.
