Corn crops coming up, soybeans progressing

Posted: Monday, Jul 1st, 2013

OGLE COUNTY — According to USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report, released on June 24, nearly all — 96 percent — of the 2013 corn crop has emerged in the 18-largest corn producing states. In 9 of the 18 largest corn-producing states – including Illinois — 100 percent of the corn crop has emerged.

USDA rated 51 percent of the corn crop as “Good” and 14 percent as “Excellent.” These ratings were better than last year when the corn crop was rated 45 “Good” and 11 percent “Excellent.” These ratings were nearly the same as last week with a slight increase in the percent of the crop in the “Excellent” category and a slight decrease in the percent of the crop in the “Good” category.

The Prairie State’s corn crop was rated as 50 percent “Good” and 17 percent as “Excellent.” Corn was rated “Excellent” in 20 percent or more in 4 of the 18 largest corn-producing states. In Ohio, 30 percent of the crop was rated “Excellent.”
