CHARLESTON — Four years ago, Michelle Dobbs crossed the finish line to take third place for Rochelle’s 3200-meter state relay team. On Saturday, in her final high school race, she crossed the finish line of the 800-meter dash a conference champion, a sectional champion, a state champion and now a state record holder with a time of 2:10.78.

“This isn’t something that just happens,” said Rochelle head coach Bruce Anderson. “This is something you work hard for, you persevere, train through the winter and all summer long. She put so much work into this, and she has made this state championship happen. She deserves every bit of it.”

Having won the preliminaries Friday morning, Dobbs knew going in to the finals on Saturday that there would be a target on her back.

When the gun went off, the other girls in the finals stayed close to their target, but only for lap one of two. After that, Dobbs turned it up a notch and proved she was the best 800 runner in the state.

“To be honest I am still a bit in shock,” Dobbs said. “After running 2:13 on Friday, I knew I had a shot at the state record, but it doesn’t make it any less surreal for me.”
