ROCHELLE ó A group of Rochelle Township High School juniors had an opportunity to learn about the Vietnam War and relate a local story to what they are learning in the classroom.

Vietnam veteran Dixon Montgomery presented to Carol Schneiderís American History classes on Monday about his experience in Vietnam.

Montgomery, a Specialist 4, was drafted in the summer of 1969 and served in Vietnam from the winter of 1969 to September 1970 with the First Armored Calvary.

While Montgomery was serving in Vietnam, he took more than 500 photographs to share once he returned home. Unfortunately, Montgomery was never able to view the images he took after returning home. He was seriously injured by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade, which resulted in the loss of his eyesight. Montgomery received a Purple Heart award for his service and sacrifice to the country.
