OGLE/LEE COUNTY — Emergency responders from the region took part in a full-scale disaster training exercise Wednesday, simulating a tornado touching down between Rochelle and Franklin Grove.

More than 20 police, fire and medical agencies from Ogle and Lee Counties participated in the drill. Six different sites were set up throughout Lee and Ogle Counties to give emergency responders a wide variety of scenarios.

Scenarios included a collapsed roof at Ashton-Franklin Center High School, a collapsed garage with two individuals trapped in a car, a bus blown over, a chlorine leak at Central School in Rochelle and a train derailment at the Union Pacific Intermodal.

“The drill was a good learning experience and I think departments are going to take away a lot from it,” Rochelle Police Detective and lead planner Terry Inman said. “While the drill was a success and everything went well, departments discovered changes they can make to improve efficiency in the case of a real disaster.”
