ROCHELLE — The weather has been relentlessly chilly and wet this spring, but it hasn’t slowed the progress being made at the Rochelle Little League baseball fields.

For the first time, Rochelle will be able to host large district and state tournaments, which according to Rochelle Little League president David Reish, is going to be good for both the baseball program and the entire Rochelle community as well.

“By moving the fences back, we are opening up the program so we can host major all-star tournaments and potentially state and district tournaments,” he said. “Hosting those events will bring a lot of people to town.”

More importantly than the economic advantages of larger Little League baseball fields, Reish said that having larger fields will also better prepare the kids and help Rochelle Little League grow bigger and better.

“Anything we can do to make Rochelle more of a baseball town, we are going to try and do it,” Reish said.

Beginning this baseball season, the Major League field has been extended back to 220 feet and the Minor League field back to 190-195 feet.
