Phones ‘ok’ in the classroom

ROCHELLE — In many schools, students caught using their phones during classroom hours will find themselves with an unpleasant reaction from their teachers at the least and in some instances, after school detention time.

At Rochelle Township High School, however, students enrolled in the “Bring Your Own Device” program are encouraged to use their cell phones, or any other device with Internet access for that matter, to tap into the school’s Wi-Fi for the sake of learning.

This national program is a new concept introduced to schools as a way to harness the benefits of technology to maximize the efficiency of learning in a classroom setting. The program does not discriminate against electronics as students with parental and faculty permission may bring in any device with Internet access.
