ROCHELLE — The Creston Lady Colts varsity basketball team took the old adage “offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships” to heart Thursday night as they shut down the Steward Eagles 23-12 to capture the Meridian Conference Girls’ Basketball Tournament Championship.
Having gone undefeated in the regular season, the Lady Colts bid for a perfect season was not going to be denied as they raced out to a 10-point lead midway through the first quarter.
The Lady Colts’ defense did not yield a made basket in the first half, thanks in part to their full court pressure defense.
Five players scored in the opening quarter as Creston built a 10-2 lead, which was stretched to 15-3 at the half and 21-7 after three quarters before Creston cruised to the championship.
