MONROE CENTER — Kayla Boyd, a fifth grader at Monroe Center Grade School, made a life saving phone call on Dec. 3. Kayla’s grandmother was suffering a diabetic attack and Kayla bravely called 911.

She was surprised Friday afternoon when fire, police and ambulance personnel filed into Mrs. McDevitt’s classroom at Monroe Center Elementary School. She thought they were there to teach the class about emergency workers, but to her surprise, everyone was there to honor her for the 911 call she made to save her grandmother’s life.

Kayla woke up to find her grandmother suffering a diabetic attack and she would not eat or drink any food. Boyd called her mother, Jamie Boyd, asking what to do and was told to call an ambulance. She said she was scared but hung up with her mother to call 911.
