Fifth grade students at May Elementary School are leaving a mark on the school walls during their final year as Mustangs. Students in Nan Elson’s art classes spent Monday morning painting murals on a wall inside the school to add color to a long stretch of hallway. Once the project is completed 17 hot air balloons will be “floating” down the hallway at May. Each fifth-grader was paired up with an Elementary Art Method student from Northern Illinois University to help encourage and mentor the students as they painted the wall. The preparation for the mural began in the fall and Elson said she chose hot air balloons because they were colorful and would be easy for the students to draw and paint. Principal Barb Cantlin will be retiring at the end of the school year and students created a hot air balloon to thank her for her dedication and service to the school for many years.
