ROCHELLE — Rochelle Municipal Utilities has provided electricity to the city since 1893, which also happens to be the same year that the light bulb was presented at Chicago’s World Fair.

Progressive as always, RMU is trying to reach the public and let them know how to conserve energy, which also happens to benefit the checkbooks of customers, as well as the environment.

This 120-year-old company currently serves 7,200 customers in the area, including the villages of Hillcrest and Creston. One-third of its customer base is located out of town boundaries, which is unusual for a municipal company, according to superintendent of electric operations, Joe Orlikowski.
