ROCHELLE — It took the Lady Hubs a few quarters to get going, but a strong third quarter was enough to hold off Class 4A ninth-ranked DeKalb 38-37 in one of the most physical games Rochelle has been in this season.
“It was very physical on both sides,” Rochelle head coach Kay Dobbs said Friday night after the Hubs/Lady Hubs double-header. “We’re not as big as they are, but we have some kids right now who aren’t afraid to play physical and who won’t let themselves get pushed around. I would not have wanted to be the refs trying to control that basketball game.”
It was a battle from the opening tip off, with both teams keying on the others’ center— Rochelle’s Michelle Dobbs and DeKalb’s Madelyn Johnson.
Intense defenses from both teams allowed little scoring through in the first quarter. Dobbs scored four points and junior guard Abby Gould scored three to give Rochelle a slight 8-7 lead at the end of the first period.
DeKalb tied the game at 11 points a few minutes into the second quarter and eventually took a 16-13 lead before the Lady Hubs could regroup. With Dobbs in early foul trouble on the bench, senior guard Marin Meiners controlled the offense and added a basket to end the second quarter with Rochelle down by one point (19-18).
