GALENA Local high school student Sarah Moroney brought home some hardware from the Special Olympics earlier this month and made her hometown proud.

Suited in her Red Feather 25 aluminum-framed racing snowshoes, Moroney crossed the finish line to bring home the silver medal and a second place in the Female Division 8 200-meter snowshoe race on Thursday, Jan. 31 and cutting a remarkable 9.8 seconds off of her entry time.

Moroney, an 18-year-old senior at Rochelle Township High School, advanced to the Special Olympics Illinois State Winter Games by winning a first place gold medal in the 200-meter snowshoe race at the area games in Princeton on Saturday, Jan. 12. Only gold medal winners advanced to the state games.

The state games for snowshoeing and skiing were held at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena running Jan. 29-31.
