ROCHELLE — The new swim club in town, “Catch the Wave,” is not only making waves but also catching the eye of the community, as local Kiwanis Club president Jessica Hughes recently donated a check to the club’s manager, Brandon Stoffregen.

The donation from Kiwanis will support three disabled children with three months of swimming lessons. Stoffregen, who is certified to teach swim lessons to people with disabilities (primarily autism), has done so for a year now and calls it his life passion.

According to Hughes, the Kiwanis organization used general funds from events such as “Peanut Day” to sponsor the swimmers. The swimming lesson recipients will be chosen through the help of nurses at Rochelle elementary schools.

“Our mission is to help the local youth in this community and felt this would be a unique way to do that. It’s a great organization,” she said.

The organization she is referring to has offered swim lessons in the South Beloit area for the past seven years and now in Rochelle, as of mid-October. Stoffregen’s mother opened the business and still runs it with the help of her son and a few instructors. The family business expanded to the Rochelle area when family friend and local teacher, Kris Fletcher, expressed a need for his unique area of expertise for locals of with disabilities.
