Now that the ice is solid enough for ice boating, Lydia Roberts, of Rochelle, takes a cruise on her TN Class ice boat recently on Lake Sule. This ice boat can reach speeds of up to 50 MPH (recognized speed record for an ice boat is 143 mph). Ice boats, depending on design, can reach speeds three to four times the wind speed when traveling perpendicular to the wind direction. Ice boats were used to haul cargo and cross large rivers with passengers in the late 1800s. (Photo submitted)
