CRYSTAL LAKE — The St. Paul Crusaders took fourth place in the Route 31 tournament in Crystal Lake last Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12 and 13. The tournament had teams from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Missouri.
In the first round, St. Paul defeated Christ Lutheran School out of Stevensville, Mich. 55-52 in triple overtime.
The game was close until two minutes left in the second quarter when St. Paul converted four straight steals and turning them into baskets to take a 26-18 lead into halftime, but Stevensville came out after halftime on fire, hitting three-ponters to take a 35-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Crusaders trailed pretty much the entire fourth quarter until about 50 seconds to go in the game when St. Paul took advantage of an opportunity to score going up by three points.
