ROCHELLE—For the fourth consecutive year, Rochelle’s First Baptist Church is hosting a five day-a-week open gym so that walking enthusiasts can protect themselves from the winter chill. Any locals, not just church members, may utilize the church’s gym from the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the winter months.
Acording to Pastor Doug Cowan, the tradition began four years ago when church members began to regularly walk laps. For some, the indoor laps escalated from an exercise regimen, to a social one, as well.
“The members that walked regularly really seemed to like it, so we decided to open the gym up to the public. Even in winter, people are always walking on the bike trail, so there is an obvious need. This way, people can keep walking but do so in a safe environment without the cold, snow and wind,” said Cowan.
